GEORGIA (USA): ANDREW BRANNAN EXECUTED

Andrew Brannan

14 January 2015 :

Andrew Brannan was executed in Georgia.
Brannan, 66, White, a Vietnam veteran, was convicted of killing sheriff's deputy Kyle Dinkheller, 22, White, during a traffic stop in January 1998.
Less than an hour earlier, the U.S. Supreme Court had denied a request for stay of execution for Brannan. Earlier on Tuesday, the Georgia Supreme Court also denied a request for a stay.
Brannan's lawyers argued before the State Board of Pardons and Paroles yesterday that the veteran with no prior criminal record was suffering severe post-traumatic stress disorder and in the throes of an emotional flashback when he pulled a rifle from his pickup truck and exchanged gunshots with Dinkheller.
Dinkheller's murder after he stopped Brannan for speeding was captured on a video camera mounted on the officer's patrol car.
Brannan becomes the 1st inmate to be put to death this year in Georgia, the 56th overall since the state resumed capital punishment in 1983, the 1st to be put to death this year in the USA and the 1395nd overall since the nation resumed executions on January 17, 1977.
