October 10, 2024 - IRAN. Iran executed at least 138 Kurdish prisoners over past Islamic year
On 10 October 2024, marking the World Day against the Death Penalty, the Kurdistan Human Rights Network (KHRN) has documented the execution of at least 138 Kurdish prisoners in various prisons across Iran over the past year. These executions, which took place between 10 October 2023 and 9 October 2024, highlight the Islamic Republic of Iran’s alarming use of the death penalty as a tool of repression and to spread fear throughout society. Despite widespread international condemnation, Iran remains one of the world’s leading executioners. KHRN strongly condemns these executions and stands in solidarity with global campaigns calling for an immediate end to the death penalty in Iran. According to statistics compiled by KHRN, 78 of the recorded executions were for drug-related offences, 39 for “Murder”, five for “armed robbery” and one for “rape”. Additionally, 15 prisoners were executed on political charges, including seven for “spreading corruption on earth” (efsad-e fel-arz), seven for “espionage for Israel”, and one for the “Murder” of an official of the Intelligence Organisation of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in Sahneh. Many of the executions, according to documents obtained and interviews with the families of those executed and other sources, followed trials by the Islamic Revolutionary Courts and criminal courts in various cities that lacked transparency and fairness. In some cases, political and religious prisoners reported being tortured into forced confessions. However, the courts dismissed allegations of torture and proceeded with the death sentences.
