October 29, 2025 - IRAN. Human rights defender Sharifeh Mohammadi’s death sentence has been commuted to 30 years’ imprisonment.

Her defence lawyer, Amir Raesian tweeted: “By decision of the honourable Head of the Judiciary, Ms Sharifeh Mohammadi’s death sentence has been commuted by one degree to first-degree imprisonment (30 years). Fortunately, the immediate risk of a tragedy has been averted, but we are still pursuing, through retrial or the application of Article 477 (judicial review), to have her conviction overturned and for her to be acquitted of the charge of baghy (armed rebellion).”

Sharifeh Mohammadi is a workers’ rights activist from Mianeh in Eastern Azerbaijan who lived in Rasht prior to her arrest on 5 December 2023. She was held incommunicado in solitary confinement where she was subjected to severe psychological and physical torture to extract forced confessions. According to her relatives, “Sharifeh never took armed action and was sentenced to death solely for her peaceful activism in workers’ rights organisations. She was under physical and psychological torture throughout her detention.”

Sharifeh was sentenced to death by Branch One of the Rasht Revolutionary Court on 4 July 2024 which was overturned by Branch 39 of the Supreme Court on 12 October 2024 and referred to a court of equal standing for retrial. Sharifeh was resentenced to death by Branch Two of the Rasht Revolutionary Court on 13 February 2025.
