IRAQ. DEATH SENTENCE FOR SADDAM DEPUTY UPHELD

Iraq's former vice-president Taha Yassin Ramadan

15 March 2007 :

an Iraqi court unanimously upheld the death sentence by hanging against Taha Yassin Ramadan, Saddam Hussein's former deputy.
Ramadan was convicted in November for his role in the killing of 148 Shiites in 1982, along with Saddam and six others. He was sentenced to life in prison, but an appeals court ruled that the sentence was too lenient and recommended that he should be hanged.
In issuing the sentence, the court ignored appeals from international human rights groups.
Human Rights Watch and the International Center for Transitional Justice stated that the evidence was insufficient for such a punishment.
