IRAQ. KURDISTAN PARLIAMENT VOTES FOR USING DEATH PENALTY

14 September 2006 :

in the 4th ordinary session of the Kurdistan parliament in Iraq, chaired by the parliament Deputy Speaker, the Kurdistan parliament unanimously voted for the resumption of capital punishment in the Kurdistan Region. 
In the 1st item, the parliament abolished article 11 in law 22 of 2003 that put an end to the use of the death penalty.
The Kurdistan Regional Government ministry of human rights issued a statement expressing opposition and dismay at resuming the application of capital sentences in the Kurdistan Region. The statement described the application of the death penalty as ‘uncivilized’ and vowed to take legal action to change the law to preserve ‘the civilized and democratic characteristics Kurdistan has been known of for years.’
