21 October 2024 :
Iraqi judges have handed down death sentences and life sentences to ten members of the Islamic State (IS) arrested in Nineveh province, Agenzia Nova reported on October 18, 2024, citing the Interior Ministry.
“Judicial authorities have handed down severe sentences (execution and life sentences) to ten terrorists arrested by our agency in Nineveh province, after the individuals confessed to their affiliation with IS,” the Federal Intelligence and Investigation Agency of the Interior Ministry said in a statement.
The agency said the suspects were involved in “multiple terrorist attacks” during the rise of IS in Iraq in 2014, “including the killing of members of the security forces and innocent civilians.”
IS took control of swathes of Iraqi territory in 2014 and was declared territorially defeated in 2017, but small cells continue to carry out attacks in several provinces across Iraq.
