MALDIVES: TWO 16-YEAR-OLD MURDER CONVICTS SENTENCED TO DEATH

11 May 2015 :

the Juvenile Court sentenced two 16-year-old murder convicts to death.
One of the minors was accused of murdering Hussein Waheed while the other was accused of aiding the crime. One of them had attacked Waheed while the other had helped him escape on his motorcycle. Both defendants had denied the crime.
However, the Court’s verdict states that four witnesses had testified against the minor facing murder charges while three witnesses had testified against the minor charged with aiding him.
Waheed’s family had also demanded that the culprits be given a death sentence.
This is the Juvenile Court's second death sentence since 27 April 2014, when detailed regulations on the implementation of the death sentence came into force in the Maldives. According to the new regulation, minors convicted of intentional murder shall be executed once they turn 18.
