in a message to both Parliament and the Senate Foreign Affairs Commission, the Italian Foreign Affairs Undersecretary, Mr Gianni Vernetti, announced that the text of the resolution for the Universal Moratorium on the death penalty will be presented “at the opening of the 62nd General Assembly, on Tuesday September 25th.”Vernetti also announced that “a few days later, on September 28th, we will hold a public political event, that is supported by the UN General Secretary
Ban Ki-Moon. During this event we will present a large number of co-sponsors from all five continents, from New Zealand to Senegal, from Angola to Mexico, from Brazil and the Philippines to Korea. “These countries are building this project with us and they are expanding the international consensus.” “Particularly interesting are countries like South Africa and Russia, with which we are having discussions on the death penalty right now.” He also stressed the importance of the recent efforts of the Italian Government “to unite the European Union”. “Today we have all twenty seven countries with us. This is the first time this has happened; there is a strong and very important commitment.”
