Daily NK, an online newspaper focusing on issues relating to North Korea, said the manager of a terrapin farm had been executed after Kim Jong-un made his field guidance tour in May to the farm near Taedong River in Pyongyang. The North Korean leader was reportedly furious about the deaths of several dozen baby turtles, and lost his temper after being told that the deaths were due to problems with the power supply and a lack of adequate food.
According to local sources, Kim lashed out at everyone present during the inspection, rebuking all present officials for their failure to normalize production and calling their explanation of electrical, water, and equipment problems as root of the issue “nonsensical complaints.”
The terrapin farm's manager was marched outside and shot “because some of the tanks were not adequately supplied with food and water, leading to the death of a lot of terrapins,” a source from the capital told Daily NK in a telephone call. News of this execution was cross-checked with two additional Daily NK sources in the capital.
Terrapin, usually served as a soup, is an expensive delicacy in North Korea. Taedong Terrapin Farm was set up by Kim Jong-un’s father Kim Jong-Il to "provide the people with tasty and nutritious terrapin widely known as a precious tonic from olden times".
