Special Judge of the Anti-Terrorism Court in Sahiwal, Ziaullah Khan, has sentenced Tariq Sheikh to two death penalties and imposed a fine of Rs1 million for burning his wife, Shazia, alive, The Tribune reported on June 30, 2024.
Failure to pay the fine will result in an additional year of imprisonment.
According to the prosecution, on the night of April 24, 2023, Shazia, a mother of eight, was set on fire by her husband, Tariq Sheikh, in Chak 93 12-L.
Shazia had been living at her parents' home for a year due to marital discord. Tariq Sheikh visited her on the pretext of reconciliation but set her on fire instead.
She was rushed to the hospital with severe burns but succumbed to her injuries.
The court sentenced Tariq Sheikh to death under Section 302 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) and imposed a fine of Rs500,000.
Additionally, under Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act, he received another death penalty and an additional fine of Rs500,000.
The Chichawatni Circle Police Station Shahkot registered the case based on a complaint by Shazia's father, Nizam.
