government forces in Somalia publicly executed two men, one of them a soldier, indicted for killing fellow army members. The execution took place in the square of the former police academy near the capital's international airport.
A number of government soldiers staged the execution, journalists were not allowed to cover or photograph the event. Officials later told reporters that Abdulayhi Dahir Muse Afweyne and Mohammed Abdi Wardheere were put to death by shooting about 9:30 am local time.
The Interim Government Military Court sentenced the two men to death after they were accused of killing two government soldiers, officials said. An officer from the Somali national security department, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said the soldiers led a group of insurgents who attacked the Somali military base in north of Mogadishu, killing two soldiers.
He also stated that 7 others who were involved in the attack were sentenced to 15 years incarceration by the Government Military Tribunal. "They are now in Mogadishu's central jail," he said. This is the first public execution that the UN backed interim government has carried out since seizing control of the capital.
