Manuel Vasquez, 46, Hispanic, was executed in Texas.Vasquez, a Mexican Mafia hit man, was convicted in the 1998 slaying of 51-year-old Juanita Ybarra because she didn’t pay the gang’s 10 percent tax on her illegal drug sales.
The injection of Manuel Vasquez with a lethal dose of pentobarbital leaves Texas with enough of the powerful sedative to carry out only one more execution.
Vasquez’s lawyers filed no late appeals to delay his execution.
Vasquez becomes the 4th inmate to be put to death this year in Texas, the 522nd overall since the state resumed capital punishment on December 7, 1982, the 9th to be put to death this year in the USA and the 1403nd overall since the nation resumed executions on January 17, 1977.
