(May 3, 2023) - Darryl Barwick executed
Barwick, 56, White, was pronounced dead at 6:14 p.m. Wednesday following a lethal injection at Florida State Prison.
Barwick didn't meet in person with family members, but had spoken with them by phone in recent days, prison officials said before the scheduled 6 p.m. execution time. Officials said no relatives of the victim had been scheduled to witness the execution.
Barwick had confessed to killing 24-year-old Rebecca Wendt in her apartment on March 31, 1986. He said he intended to rob Wendt but then killed her as she resisted, stabbing her 37 times as she tried to fight him off. However, the medical examiner’s office found semen on the comforter wrapped around Wendt’s body. He was 19 years old at the time.
The jury at his 1987 trial recommended the death penalty with a vote of 9-3, and unanimously at his 1992 retrial.
Barwick was pronounced dead at 6:14 p.m.. The execution team began administering the lethal cocktail of three drugs which include a sedative, paralytic, and a drug to stop his heart, at 6:02 p.m.
Barwick becomes the 3rd execution this year in Florida, 102nd since Florida resumed executions in 1979, the 11th this year in the U.S., and the 1,569th overall since the nation resumed executions in 1977.
