February 6, 2024 - Florida. Marcelle Waldon, 39, Black, sentenced to death.
A Polk County jury on Tuesday returned an 11-1 verdict for Marcelle Waldon, who was found guilty last week for the 2020 murders of Edie Yates-Henderson and her husband, David Henderson.
The couple was killed in their home on Nov. 11, 2020. She was 67. Her husband was 63. According to authorities, both of the victims were stabbed.
Waldon, 39, was found guilty in a Polk County courtroom Jan. 31.
Police say he held Edith Yates Henderson at gunpoint and forced her to write two $5,000 checks to him before stabbing the couple to death.
Waldon's attorneys tried to convince the jury that their defendant was a homeless man, caught in desperate times, and committed a crime of opportunity.
Under a recent change to Florida law, juries no longer have to be unanimous to recommend the death penalty. The new minimum is a three-fourths majority.
