February 13, 2025 - Ohio. Gov DeWine issues 3 death penalty reprieves
Rescheduling executions to 2028
3 death row inmates have had their dates of execution by Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine.
Percy Hutton was scheduled to be executed on June 18; new date of execution has been moved to June 21, 2028.
Samuel Moreland was scheduled to be executed on July 30; new date of execution has been moved to July 19, 2028.
Douglas Coley was scheduled to be executed on Sept. 24; new date of execution has been moved to August 15, 2028.
According to DeWine’s office, the reprieves were issued due to “ongoing problems involving the willingness of pharmaceutical suppliers to provide drugs to the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction (DRC), pursuant to DRC protocol, without endangering other Ohioans.”
Since taking office in 2019, DeWine has not permitted a single execution.
The reprieves come amid renewed calls to abolish the death penalty from both sides of the aisle in the Ohio Statehouse.
