USA - Tennessee. Senate passed SB 0400 to reduce appeals for death sentences

23 March 2019 :

The Senate voted 26-6 for Republican Sen. John Stevens' legislation (SB 0400, the Senate version of HB 0258) to skip Tennessee's Court of Criminal Appeals and provide automatic state Supreme Court death penalty reviews. One Republican voted no. The bill now goes to governor Bill Lee. The Republican appears poised to sign it.

A death row inmate convicted of killing two people by burying them alive in Okayama Prefecture in western Japan in 2006, died on January 31, 2026, the Justice Ministry said, with suicide being suspected.
