INDONESIA. NAVY COLONEL SENTENCED TO DEATH FOR DOUBLE SLAYING

03 March 2006 :

the Surabaya Military Court, Indonesia, sentenced to death Navy Colonel M. Irfan Djumroni for murdering his former wife and a religious court judge in a frenzied attack after he lost a court case. The military court found Ifran guilty of stabbing his ex-wife Eka Suhartini and judge Ahmad Taufik to death at Sidoarjo Religious Court, East Java, in September 2005.
Ahmad had tried to intervene after Irfan left the courtroom, retrieved a combat knife from his car and attacked Eka. He was infuriated after the court granted Eka, who divorced him in February 2004, ownership of a house and custody of their two children. In the verdict, read by presiding judge Col. Burhan Dahlan, Irfan was found guilty of violating the law and was given a dishonorable discharge for tarnishing the Navy's reputation.
Irfan, who had expressed remorse for his actions and pleaded for the opportunity to raise his children, said he would appeal the verdict.
