INDONESIA. WOMAN EXECUTED FOR TRIPLE MURDERS

07 July 2005 :

an Indonesian woman, 49-year-old Astini, was executed in the East Java capital of Surabaya after spending eight years in jail for a series of murders in which three women were killed and mutilated.
Astini became the fourth person executed in Indonesia in the space of a year following the 2004 executions of three foreign nationals for drug trafficking and she was the first Indonesian executed since 2001.
Astini, who had been sentenced to death in 1996 for the murders committed between 1993 and 1995, had been declared sane by doctors despite admitting to "chopping down" her victims. All her victims had been killed after they asked her to repay debts.
"She was completely aware of her actions - she was in good mental health when she committed the murders," the prosecutors had said.
