PHILIPPINES: PALACE REJECTS REIMPOSITION OF DEATH PENALTY

President Benigno Aquino III

15 March 2012 :

The President of the Philippines is not inclined to support moves that seek the reimposition of the capital punishment.
"Our position is we are not in agreement with the imposition of death penalty given the present justice system. There's a likelihood that because of our poor justice system, there's a likelihood that the person who is not guilty of the crime could be meted out with death penalty," said Presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda, in his regular press briefing.
Lacierda said that this was also the position of President Benigno Aquino III when he ran for president in 2010.
Some quarters have been proposing for the reimposition of the death penalty, which was scrapped during the previous administration, as cases of children being raped and murdered recently occurred.
