SOUTH KOREA. SOLDIER SENTENCED TO DEATH OVER SHOOTING

24 November 2005 :

a South Korean army court martial sentenced Private First Class Kim Dong-min to death for killing eight soldiers while on guard duty on the border with North Korea, an army spokesman said.
Kim tossed a grenade among barrack comrades in June and then opened fire, the Defence Ministry said at the time.
Four others were wounded in the attack which was so intense some survivors thought North Korea had attacked across the fortified Demilitarised Zone border.
"A court martial sentenced him to death," the army spokesman said by telephone, but added that Kim could appeal to a higher Defence Ministry court martial and to the Supreme Court. The government report on the incident said Kim was so engrossed in online war games he could not distinguish between fantasy and reality.
