21 November 2023 :

In the Galgaduud region's Guriceel city, Somalia's Military Court executed soldier Abdisalan Ali Ahmed on November 19, 2023 for the murder of Abdullahi Ali Hudey.
Hudey was reportedly related to the area's police commander.
The execution, carried out in the town's public square by a NISA soldier, underscores the military's stance on crimes involving its personnel.
Ahmed was convicted of intentionally killing Hudey, leading to his death sentence by the Somali Armed Forces' Court just days ago.
This incident reflects the military's stringent measures against personnel misconduct.
Somalia's military court has handed down dozens of similar rulings in the past for soldiers convicted of murder. Future implications of such actions on military discipline and public perception remain to be seen. 

27 March 2023 :

The Puntland Armed Forces Court on 26 March 2023 sentenced ten members of Al-Shabaab to death after they were found guilty of carrying out a series of bombings and assassinations in Puntland state, and for being members of the Al-Shabaab network.
The ten men were found to be members of Al-Shabaab who carried out killings in Galka’ayo town of Mudug region.
Among the convicts are Adde Abdullahi Mohamed Ilmi, Abdiqani Saleeman Jama Saylor, Hassan Jama Mohamed, Mohamed Ali Ahmae Muse and Farhan Faisal Salad Hirsi.
Others include Abdullahi Faisal Hussein, Barkhad Awil Hirsi Nur, Liban Aden Muse, Abdiqani Farhan Abdullahi and Abdirahman Awil Mohamed.
The court said the men admitted that they were members of Al-Shabab, but some of them claimed they had not taken part in the attacks. The men were captured by security forces hours after the attack.
The court said the court had given them a month to appeal the verdict.

18 March 2023 :

A military court in Somalia on 15 March 2023 executed three al-Shabab militants it said pretended to be a doctor and soldiers to carry out bombings and shootings.
The military appeals court in Mogadishu ordered the executions of three men it said were al-Shabab militants who disguised themselves to carry out deadly attacks in the city.
The court said 38-year-old Mohamed Abdi Nur Jirow used fake names and titles, including calling himself “Dr. Fanah” and claiming to be a a neurologist.
Authorities say in 2021 he bombed two restaurants in Mogadishu, killing 20 people.
The court said Jirow also killed two people in an attack on a football stadium on the outskirts of Mogadishu, though it didn’t say when, and helped with a suicide bombing in February that killed one soldier.
Mumin Hussein Abdullahi is the deputy prosecutor at the military court.
He said on 15 March they executed the convicts Mohamed Abdi Nur Jirow, also known as Dr. Fanah, Mohamed Abdulle Abkow, known as Bimalow, and Sharif Mohamed Barqadle Ayanle, also known as Jeego.
The court said 36-year-old Bimalow pretended to be a military lieutenant and bombed a restaurant in Mogadishu in 2019, killing 11 people.

22 January 2023 :

A Somali court on 19 January 2023 sentenced a top operative of Al-Shabaab to death, dealing another blow to the terror group that has recently been chased out of most towns.
Mohamed Abdi Jirow, known as ‘Dr Fanah’, was sentenced to death in a case heard in the military court in Mogadishu that ended on 14 January.
Pronouncing the death penalty on 19 January, the court said it had found him guilty of various plots against government officials and civilians over many years.
Jirow admitted to have used various identities as a disguise, including falsely portraying himself as a neurosurgeon. He also acquired military uniforms, decorated with the rank of ‘major’.
“As a disguise, I used different professions and identities including ‘Dr Fanah’ as a specialised medical doctor, an army major, two identity cards from a clinic and Somalia’s ministry of health and human care,” ‘said Dr Fanah’ as quoted in court documents.
The Shabaab operative said he possessed a total of five IDs including one from the UNDP. He profited from Somalia’s lack of a nationally accepted identity card system, which enables civilians to adopt various aliases.
“I had arranged all those cards to mislead the government’s security apparatus,” he claimed.
The court revealed that Jirow was involved in operations that caused deaths of many people. In a televised session on the Somali National Television (SNTV), a state-run media, he claimed to have arranged a suicide attack against delegates representing the north western regions during the election of the members of parliament last year.
The high-profile attack in Eel-Gaab area in downtown Mogadishu was executed by an individual wearing an explosive device.
“I had arranged the attack and delivered the bomber to Eel-Gaab area (in Mogadishu),” Jirow admitted.
The court announced that the convict had been apprehended in Beledweyne town, 335 kilometres north of Mogadishu, after he was suspiciously found uniformed as an army major.
The court had learnt that the 27-year-old man joined Al-Shabaab in 2007.

14 January 2023 :

The Court of the Armed Forces of Somalia has sentenced to death a former army official – Sharif Mohamed Barkhadle Ayanle for his role in Mogadishu blasts, Shabelle Media reported on 12 January 2023.
Ayanle was a member of the National Army for many years before being brainwashed and recruited by the militant group Al-Shabaab. He facilitated car bombings that killed at least 27 people.
He was convicted of smuggling the IEDs-laden vehicles from the Al-Shabaab group to Mogafishu using his army ID and driving the VBIEDs to the intended targets.
The court said that he parked VBIEDs at the gates of several commercial areas in Mogadishu such as: Village Hotel, Afar Restaurant, Bar Italia, around Hamar-Weyne Mall, Cagaweyne Restaurant, Bilsan Restaurant, and other places in 2019.
He was also accused of selling two mortars and 40 rounds of ammunition to Al-Shabaab that was later used for shelling Mogadishu.
According to Lieutenant Colonel Hassan Ali Noor Shute, the chairman of the Court, Ayanle has 30 days to appeal against the verdict and if failed he will directly face the firing squad.
Ayanle, a 53-year-old ex-member of the army reached the rank of captain in the SNA and served since 2000, according to the military court.

08 November 2023 :

A military court in Mogadishu has upheld the death sentence slapped on a tuk-tuk driver who had been convicted of murdering a police officer in Mogadishu, Garowe Online reported on November 7, 2023.
The military court discredited the appeal lodged by Abdullahi Abdi Mustafa, who had been convicted for the death of constable Abdikarin Ibrahim Ali alias Awdaango, a popular police officer in Mogadishu. The death happened in December 2022 according to court records.
The convict carried out the murder around the Afisyoni area, a highly protected place just near where the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia [ATMIS] offices and diplomatic missions stay.
Prosecutors proved their case beyond reasonable doubt, the court ruled.
In the first instance, the military court slapped the convict with a death sentence in February before he rushed to the appeal, seeking reprieve.
The court had also sentenced another police officer, identified as Dahir Abdi Mustaf to four years in jail for abetting the crime. Documents provided in court show that Abdullahi Abdi Mustafa was stopped by constable Awdaango who asked for some documents, but the former took a gun from his brother Dahir Abdi Mustafa and shot him dead at close range.
Dahir was attached to Banadir Police.

02 November 2023 :

The self-declared Republic of Somaliland on November 1st, 2023 executed five men for murder in Hargeisa.
The execution occurred in the Mandhera prison, known for firing squads.
President, Muse Bihi Abdi, recently approved the executions of these men, whose names have not yet been released by the government.
The government of Somaliland typically carries out executions discreetly.
As of now, the authorities have not made any statements regarding these executions.
Somaliland, officially the Republic of Somaliland, is an unrecognised sovereign state in the Horn of Africa, recognised internationally as de jure part of Somalia.

26 October 2023 :

The High Court of the Armed Forces in Somalia on October 25, 2023 upheld the death sentence for Constable Mohamed Abdihakin Mohamed Salah Ganey, who was convicted of murdering his fellow soldier.
The sentenmce was confirmed by General Liban Ali Yarow, the Chairman of the High Court of the Armed Forces.
Constable Ganey was found guilty of the fatal shooting of his compatriot, the late Constable Abdullahi Mohamed Abdulqadir. Both men served in the 22nd unit of the 23rd Somali National Armed Forces (SNA) Gungaar brigade.
The incident took place in the Daynile district of the Banadir region on July 20, 2023.
The case was initially heard by the First Degree Court of the Armed Forces, which, following an inquiry, ruled that Constable Ganey was culpable of a capital offence.
“After careful consideration of the evidence and arguments from both parties, it was ascertained that Constable Mohamed Abdihakin Mohamed Salah Ganey committed the crime he was accused of,” stated the judge of the First Degree Court.
The verdict of October 25 upheld the death sentence, reaffirming the severity of the crime committed.
The Court allowed ample time for representations from both the defence and prosecution before arriving at its final decision.

24 October 2023 :

A firing squad on October 23, 2023 morning executed two Somali soldiers in the southern town of Baidoa.
Geedow Mohamed Fidle known as Aburow and Ismail Abdullahi Abdirahman known as Dhagey breathed their last and faced the full brunt of justice for killing innocent civilians.
The execution took place in a public square in Baidoa, the capital of the Bay region, and the relatives of the slain civilians were present to witness that justice had finally been done.
The Armed Forces Court has sent a warning to the soldiers at the federal and state levels, saying that the law will be applied to everyone who harms civilians or kills them unlawfully.
Somali authorities have executed a number of militants in the past year as they wage an all-out war against al-Shabab, Al-Qaeda's most powerful affiliate in East Africa.
Somali troops at times have been accused of using excessive force. In April 2022, a military court in Mogadishu executed two other Somali army soldiers, also for killing civilians.

20 May 2023 :

Somali military court in Baidoa executed two men by firing squad in Baidoa on the morning of May 18, 2023.
The executed individuals were identified as Adan Ali Abdi, who was responsible for the murder of Moalim Dahir Abdullahi Mukhtar, and Mohamed Geedow Nurow, who also killed the late Jamal Abdikarin Madey.
South West regional state officials and the deceased relatives were at the firing squad.
This execution marks the latest in a series of court-sanctioned executions in Baidoa this year.

11 April 2023 :

A military court in Puntland on 8 April 2023 sentenced 14 members of the militant group Al-Shabaab, to death. 
The 14 convicts' ages range from 18 to 54, with 11 of them being born in Galkayo. Two of the convicts allegedly confessed to the murder of journalist Jamal Farha Adan, who was murdered in March 2021 in northern Galkayo. 
Puntland has recently increased the sentencing of Al-Shabaab members in prison, and on 8 March this year, 13 militants from the Al-Shabaab and Islamic State terror groups were executed by firing squad.

09 March 2023 :

Nineteen men were executed on 8 March 2023 by Puntland's military court.
Thirteen of these 19 men belonged to the Al-Shabaab and Daesh groups.
Their executions occurred in three different cities - Galkayo, Garowe, and Bosaso - around 8:00 a.m.
In Galkayo, five men who belonged to the Al-Shabaab security forces were shot and killed in the Wadajir area of Galmudug.
Meanwhile, Shuayb Mohamed (also known as Jaffar) was executed in Garowe. He had been involved in fighting between Puntland and Shabaab forces in Suuj, Garmaal, and Kulub back in 2016. Although he was offered amnesty and rehabilitation, he rejoined Al-Shabaab and committed murders in Mogadishu. He was arrested while travelling to Bosaso and subsequently executed.
In addition to these events, six men who belonged to the Al-Shabaab and Daesh networks were executed in Bosaso town for role in killings in the port city.
The military court also executed six soldiers by firing squad after they were convicted of carrying out several civilian killings in the state, which brings the total number of people executed on 8 March to 19.

21 February 2023 :

Four Somali officials, including from the military, police and the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) were executed on 2 February 2023 by firing squad in the nation’s capital of Mogadishu.
“Today, 2 February 2023, the military court executed Bukhari Awil Mohamud of the national intelligence and security agency (NISA), Ali Mohamud Hussein of the military forces, Abdirisaaq Ahmed Mukhtar member of the police forces and Mohamed Nur Sheikh Warre, who was also a member of the police, after the court found them guilty of killing fellow soldiers,” separately in the Lower Shabelle region and the border town of Dolow in the Gedo region, Mohamed Abdullahi Khalif, deputy prosecutor of the armed forces of Somalia told reporters.

20 February 2023 :

Two Somali officials were executed on 18 February 2023 by firing squad in the nation’s capital of Mogadishu.
“Today, 18 February 2023, the military court executed Hassan Juule Shakir of a local government officer, Khasim Duale Abdi of the local government officer,” the court statement reads in part.
Abdi was found guilty of killing Abukar Mohamed Sheikh Nourani (Abirimo) while Shakir was found guilty of killing Ali Taliye Arif, in Hamarweyne and Bal’ad town respectively.
Abukar Mohamed Sheikh Nurani (Abirimo), who had a small business in Hamarweyne District of Banadir Region, was shot dead after a dispute over a tax amounting 5,000 Sh.so.
Hassan Juulle Shakir killed Ali Taliye Arif who was driving a Tuk-Tuk motorcycle.
Shakir and Abdi were convicted of civilian shooting on 10 January 2023.
The soldiers were shot dead by the military court in a clear warning to the forces that are causing harm to the people they are trained to defend them and ensure their safety.

19 January 2023 :

Two Al Shabaab members were sentenced to death on 17 January 2023 in Somalia for their role in the October 2022 murder of a government security official.
Ahmed Sahal Ali Mohamud and Qudama Hamsa Yusuf were convicted of murdering police officer Shuke Adawe Mohamed in Mogadishu's Karan district back.
A military firing squad will execute the convicted killers after they exhaust their appeals.
The court also found the two Al Shabaab members to be guilty of participating in other attacks against police and security officials.
Mohamud joined the militant insurgency group in 2017, while Yusuf joined Al Shabaab in 2020.
The pair have confessed to being active participants in battles against government security forces in Somalia and Kenya.

16 January 2023 :

A Somali soldier - Qasim Duale Abdi - was sentenced to death on 15 January 2023 for killing a civilian after refusing to pay him extortion, an army officer said.
Abukar Mohamed Nurani, a well-known street vendor lost his life for 5,000 Somali Shillings which is equivalent to $0.25 last week after engaging in an argument with the SNA soldier.
The cold blood murder was condemned by the public who put pressure on the government to bring the killer to justice.
The police acted swiftly and nabbed the culprit while on the run, according to the reports.
On 15 January, the court of the armed forces announced the death sentence against the soldier and said the ruling will be executed if the defendant fails to appeal in 30 days.
Somali president Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said on January 12 at an anti-al-Shabaab rally in Mogadishu that the government will prosecute every soldier who commits civilian killings.
