BANGLADESH: 7 SENTENCED TO DEATH IN HABIGANJ MURDER CASE

A court in Habiganj has sentenced seven people to death and 10 others to life imprisonment on the charge of killing a man at Sadar upazila in 2003.
Habiganj Additional District and Sessions Judge Court-1 Judge Azizul Haque handed down the order on April 30, 2024.
The condemned convicts were Joynal Miah, Milon Ahmed, Abul Fazal, Kutub Uddin, Rafiq Miah, Zakir Hossain, and Abbas Uddin.
On the other hand, the lifers were Sayed Ali, Mizaz Ali, Motlib Miah, Kutub Uddin, Abul Kalam, Ziaur Rahman, Ayat Ali (absconding), Isak Ali, Jaj Miah, and Ibrahim.
The court also fined them Tk 1 lakh each, said Saleh Uddin Ahmed, additional public prosecutor of the court.
According to the prosecution, convict Milon Ahmed along with 40 to 50 of his associates struck Harun Ahemd and seven or eight people with sharp weapons on their way at Hurgaon village on February 14, 2003, over establishing supremacy in the area, leaving Harun dead on the spot.
After that, the victim's brother, Sumon Ahmed, filed a case with Habiganj Sadar Model Police Station accusing 47 people.
Police later submitted a charge-sheet against them to the court on August 18.
The court pronounced the verdict on April 30 after taking the testimony of 15 witnesses of the case.
Meanwhile, the court acquitted 22 accused as the allegations brought against them were not proved. eight other accused died during the trial.
