BANGLADESH: BANGABANDHU’S KILLER MAJED HANGED

The self-confessed and convicted killer of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Abdul Majed was hanged on 12 April 2020 at Keraniganj Dhaka Central Jail amid tight security. He was hanged at around 12.01 am, ‍said Mahbubul Islam, jailer of Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj.
Majed took a bath in the evening before the execution. Then he offered Asha prayers at 8:30 pm and then he was given dinner. Before being taken to the gallows, the imam of the prison mosque offered him repentance.
Inspector General (Prisons) Brigadier General AKM Mustafa Kamal Pasha and civil surgeon and district magistrate of Dhaka were present during the execution. A 10 men Jallad including Abul, Tariqul, and Sohail helped to execute killer Abdul Majed.
Jail sources said the body will be sent to his village home in Bhola for burial.
Earlier on 10 April night, five members, including Majed’s wife Saleha, one brother-in-law and one uncle-in-law met him at Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj. They spent around 25 minutes with Majed, said jail official Mahbubul Islam.
On 8 April, President Abdul Hamid turned down the mercy petition of Majed, clearing the way for his execution.
Also on the same day, Dhaka’s District and Session’s Court issued the death warrant for Majed after he was produced before his court from the jail. A team of the Counter-Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit arrested Majed from the city’s Mirpur area on 7 April.
Captain Majed was arrested on 7 April from Capital's Gabtoli in the wee hours, after decades of remaining absconding.
On 15 August 1975, Bangladesh’s founding father Bangabandhu and most of his family members were assassinated by a cabal of military men. During the assassination of Bangabandhu on 15 August 1975, Majed, Noor, and Risaldar Moslehuddin along with others were present there when he was a lieutenant.
