GAMBIA: PRESIDENT PROMISES TO IMPLEMENT DEATH PENALTY

Gambian President Yahya Jammeh

23 September 2009 :

Gambian President Yahya Jammeh has promised to carry out the "death penalty" to curtail increasing cases of murder in the tiny West African nation, sources confirmed to PANA.
"The death penalty is there to ensure that nobody kills anybody," Jammeh said, adding "we are going to implement the death penalty to the letter”.
"If you kill and the law says you must die, you will die. Reckless driving resulting to death is also tantamount to murder."
According to the Gambian President, there had been so many media reports of road accidents resulting in death, rape and some killings in the country.
Jammeh made the remarks in a recent meeting with the country's religious leaders at the end of the Moslem month of Ramadan.
