According to reports obtained by Hengaw, on the morning of Tuesday, January 23, 2024, Mohammad Ghobadlou's death sentence was carried out in Ghezel-Hesar Prison in Karaj.
The execution of Mr. Ghobadlou, given his mental state, is considered a flagrant violation of international human rights standards, strongly condemned by Hengaw, viewing it as a blatant breach of both human rights and international laws including even Iran’s own regulations.
Maasumeh Ahmadi, the mother of the executed inmate, in a video released, stated that her son, Mohammad Ghobadlou had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and that he had skipped his treatments several months prior to his arrest. In the same time period credible evidence was released reiterating the mentality disorder condition of Mr. Ghobadloo.
Mohammad Ghobadlou's execution took place even after his sentence had been overturned in Branch One of the Supreme Court. However, on the evening of Monday, January 22nd, 2024, the Iranian judiciary, through an official statement, announced the execution of the verdict.
Amir Reisian, Mohammad Ghobadlou's lawyer, reacting to the execution of his client, stated "Any decision made in the process of Article 477 does not negate Mohammad Ghabadloo's right to reconsideration for retrial." In addition he emphasized that the execution lacks legal authorization, stating unequivocally that it amounts to murder.
Ghobadlou had been accused by the Iranian judiciary for running a group of government forces over and killing an official named "Farid Karampour." Subsequently, he was sentenced to death by the Revolutionary Court in Tehran, presided by chief Judge Abolqasem Salavati, notorious as the "Judge of Death," on charges of "canonically outlawed."
The ambiguous status of Mohammad Ghobadloo's case persisted until the evening of Monday January 22nd and despite being once overturned by the Supreme Court, the execution was announced in an official statement by the Criminal Court of Public and Revolutionary Prosecution in Robat Karim.
Prior to Mohammad Ghobadloo, the death sentences of ten other detained protesters associated with the 2022/23 nationwide movement, including Mohsen Shokati, Majidreza Rahnavard, Mohammad Mehdi Karami, Mohammad Hosseini, Saleh Mirhashemi, Majid Kazemi, Saeed Yaghoobi, Milad Zahrawand, Mohammad Ramz Rashidi, and Naeim Hashemi Qatalli, had been executed.
