03 January 2007 :

on the nonviolent initiative undertaken by Marco Pannella, now on his seventh day of a hunger and thirst strike, Radical Party leaders Sergio D’Elia (Secretary of Hands Off Cain), Elisabetta Zamparutti (treasurer of HOC and of the Italian Radical Party), Rita Bernardini (Secretary of the Italian Radical Party), Maria Antonietta Coscioni (President of the Italian Radical Party), Daniele Capezzone (President of the House of Deputies Production Affairs Commission), Marco Cappato (Secretary of the Luca Coscioni Association), Sergio Stanzani (President of No Peace Without Justice) and Maurizio Turco (Deputy Vice President of the Senate of the Transnational Radical Party) make the following declaration:
“The Italian government can make a formal commitment by presenting a resolution for a universal moratorium on capital executions at the ongoing UN General Assembly or during an extraordinary session to be convened at the request of the Security Council according to articles 8 and 9 of Assembly procedures. To this effect, decisive political action by the Italian government would be to already begin gathering support in favour of the resolution.”
