KENYA: MPS WANT DEATH PENALTY ABOLISHED

05 June 2009 :

the Committee on Administration, National Security and Local Authorities reported to the Kenyan Parliament that more than 900 death row convicts are in Nairobi prisons alone.
The countrywide number is 5,000, according to a report tabled before the House.
The committee, chaired by Mr Fred Kapondi, also reported rampant corruption in jails. Noting that no convict had been executed for over 20 years, the team proposed commuting death sentences for those who had served 14 years or were more than 60 to life terms.
