KENYA: TWO SENTENCED TO DEATH FOR ROBBERY

In Kenya, a jailed bird who has been in and out of prison nine times and his accomplice was sentenced to hang by an Embu Court. 
They were accused of robbery with violence. The 47-year-old John Ngare Njiru has been in and out of prison since 1984. His accomplice David Mugo Kimonge 43 were yesterday sentenced by Embu Senior Principal Magistrate Lucy Mbugua.
Njiru and Kimonge had robbed Michael Ireri of his motor vehicle, a mobile phone, wrist watch all valued Sh707, 000.
The robbery took place at Evurore Kiamachaki village in Embu on August 18 2010. The victim was injured in the process. Mbugua said the evidence given by the witnesses was overwhelming and proved beyond any reasonable doubt that they committed the offence.
She said she had no alternative but to sentence them to hang.
The magistrate however acquitted four other suspects.
Njiru first taste of jail was in 1984 when he was 19 years old. He had then broken into a canteen. He was arrested and ordered to receive three strokes of the cane by the court. In 1985, he was jailed for one-and-half month for assault and again ordered to get three strokes of the cane.
Eight years later in 1993, he was sentenced to 10 years and ordered to receive six strokes of the cane. He had been accused of robbery.
Njiru and Kimonge have 14 days to appeal.
