MALDIVES: NABEEL’S EXECUTION ORDER APPEALED IN HIGH COURT

Faruhad (R) and Nabeel

24 March 2011 :

The death penalty issued in Maldives by the Criminal Court to Mohamed Nabeel, 21, of Maafanu Asaree, who was convicted of stabbing Faruhad, 18, of Seenu Atoll Hulhudhoo Lilymaage to death, has been appealed in High Court, Haveeru Daily website reported.
A High Court official said the death penalty was appealed on February 1 – 71 days after it was issued on November 22, 2010.
Criminal Court also sentenced two other suspects – Ali Razeen, 21, of Maafannu Bluelake Cottage and Ibrahim Naufal, 20, of Maafannu Reyalivaage – in the murder of Abdulla Faruhad to four years imprisonment.
Delivering the verdict in Nabeel’s trial, Criminal Court Judge Ali Hussein Rasheed declared that Nabeel and his younger sister’s confessions in the police investigation were valid despite rejecting the charges in the trial.
Nabeel was sentenced to death because Faruhad’s four heirs demanded it.
“As death sentence is the penalty for murder under Islamic Shari’a and Abdulla Faruhad’s heirs demanded it, the court, therefore, sentences Mohamed Nabeel to death,” Rasheed declared.
