PALESTINIAN AUTHORITY. FOUR MEN CONVICTED OF MURDER EXECUTED

09 July 2005 :

the Palestinian Authority executed four convicted murderers, officials said, defying international calls to halt capital punishment as part of reforms considered key to securing future Palestinian statehood.
Three -- Wa'el Sha'ban al-Shoubaki, Salah Khalil Musallam, and 'Oda Muhammad Abu 'Azab -- were hanged after being sentenced to death for murder in 1995 and 1996. The fourth, Muhammad Daoud al-Khawaja, was convicted of murder in 2000 after a trial before the notoriously unfair State Security Court, which has since been abolished. He was put to death by firing squad. The executions were the first carried out in Palestinian-ruled areas since 2002.
