ITALY. CALDEROLI’S STATEMENT ON UNABOMBER DANGEROUS, D’ELIA
March 14, 2005: Hands Off Cain Secretary and Radical Party board member, Sergio D’Elia, warned about the dangerous consequences of Minister Roberto Calderoli’s proposal to offer a reward for the Italian Unabomber and to sentence him to death if caught.
“I’m not criminalising Minister Calderoli for his proposal to issue a reward for the capture of the Unabomber and for his beliefs in favour of the death penalty,” said Sergio D’Elia.
“On the other hand, he is a minister of the republic and should know the Italian constitution and the international obligations our country is held to which prohibit the death penalty.
“I’m worried about the criminal consequences his proposal will have,” stated D’Elia.
“Here we are not faced with a Bin Laden, but with a small time terrorist playing a game of cat and mouse. To honour him with a reward and with the death penalty is to legitimise and put a value to his criminal activities.”
“In his challenge with those who are trying to catch him, the Unabomber will see fit to commit a crime proportional to the reward offered for him and for his death sentence.”
“The death penalty and the reward are both absurd, especially as they have come from a man with governmental responsibilities. They will not do anything but augment and aggravate the chain of criminal acts.” (Sources: HOC, 14/03/2005)
