IRAN: DISSIDENT HANGED, RIOT BREAKS OUT IN KARAJ JAIL
December 30, 2009: dissident Ardeshir Geshavarz was hanged in the northern Iranian city of Karaj. He was accused of murdering a police officer. Opposition website "Cyrusnews" reported that prisoners in Gohardasht jail in Karaj protested Geshavarzâs hanging by chanting anti government slogans and rioting.
The situation could not be contained by the jail police, who had to call for reinforcements from other jails in order to suppress the attempted revolt. Geshavarz, 35, was a recluse for the last 6 years and managed to evade jail, but he was arrested by the Iranian police force. (Sources: Adnkronos, 30/12/2009)
