IRAN - Hands off Cain Year End Report: At least 284 executions in 2020
January 5, 2021: At least 284 executions carried out in 2020 in Iran. There were at least 298 in 2019, and 328 in 2018. This is a drop of 14 executions compared to 2019, and 44 compared to 2018, a drop of 4.7% and 13.4% respectively. Recalling that these are incomplete data, almost all taken from reliable but unofficial sources, the decrease is however evident. The end-of-year balance sheets change from source to source. Hands off Cain during the year collects information on Iran from a dozen sites, almost all NGO sites that publish from abroad. Some of these sites are focused on a single ethnic minority (mainly Kurds and Baluchs, but also Afghans, Arabi-Ahwazi). Others pay particular attention to political opponents, or to women. The official Iranian sources, for their part, translate only some information into English, and among those translated there are almost never executions. NtC considers IHR to be the most comprehensive site when it comes to executions. Compared to the IHR count, NtC has added other reports from capitalpunishmentuk.org, Hengaw, Iran HRM, irannewsupdate.com, IRIB, Javanehha, KHRN, kurdpa.net, Radio Farda, Tehran Times, and women.ncr. These are essentially the same sources used for the 2019 and 2018 NtC counts, so the comparison of the figures is between homogeneous data. Almost all of the executions this year took place for murder. In 22 cases the crime was not specified, in 25 cases the death sentence was issued for drug trafficking, and in 9 cases for rape, apparently not followed by the death of the victim. 3 men were executed for "espionage", 3 for baghy (baghi): terrorism, and one for "Shurb al Khamr": "drinking alcohol". Of the 277 executions, 8 were carried out on women, and at least 6 (according to some sources 8) on young men who were still minors at the time of the crime.
