CHINA: NINE DEATH SENTENCES UPHELD IN XINJIANG
October 30, 2009: an appeals court in western China upheld the death sentences of 9 people convicted of murder and other criminal acts during a deadly ethnic riot on July 5 in the Xinjiang capital Urumqi, according to Xinhua.
The death sentences will be reviewed by the Supreme Peopleâs Court.
Except for one man with an ethnic Han name, the convicts all have Uighur names. The nine people sentenced to death are Abdukerim Abduwayit, Gheni Yusup, Abdulla Mettohti, Adil Rozi, Nureli Wuxiu'er, Alim Metyusup,Ahmatjan Moming, Tohti Pazil and Han Junbo.
