BANGLADESH. ELEVEN SENTENCED TO DEATH FOR MURDER
July 31, 2005: eleven persons, including two young women, were sentenced to death for the murder of a business tycoon of old Dhaka city, Mohamed Alam.
The death sentenced convicts are : Farida, Matiur Rahman alias Zamai Matia, Babul Hasan alias Babu Zamai, Jahanara Begum, Kabir, Sohel, Sohag Bepari, Babul, Yusuf, Dulal and Al-Aminâthe last two convicts Dulal and Al-Amin are absconding.
Convict Farida was a faithful maid-servant of the slain industrialist while Zamai Matia and Babu Zamai are his sons-in-law.
The sons-in-law and the maid-servant Farida made the heinous conspiracy to kill the industrialist for having economic gains out of the vast property after the murder of the main victim.
On January 1, 2002 at night the convicts following their conspiracy slaughtered rich Alam in his residence at Jurain. After the murder was committed the convicts stole cash money and golden ornaments kept in the house work some crores.
The court examined 57 witnesses, but as the Speedy Trial Tribunal could not complete the trial within its specified time, the case was shifted to the Court of Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Rabiul Hasan as per law, in which the trial began again on September 5, 2004.
The Court declared the verdict reviewing the confessional statements, depositions of the witnesses and other evidences in a crowded court room. (Sources: The New Nation, 31/07/2005)
