RUSSIA. COE’S HEAD REMINDS RUSSIA TO FORBID DEATH PENALTY
October 9, 2005: Council of Europe Secretary General Terry Davis expressed hope that Russia would ratify the sixth protocol to the European Convention of Human Rights. In an interview to Interfax news agency Davis said he hoped Russia would fulfill its promise “in the nearest perspective.” He reminded that Russia had promised to forbid the death penalty in 1996 while entering the COE.
However, he said he “knows nothing” about any sanctions that could be imposed on Russia if it does not ratify the protocol. (Sources: MosNews, 09/10/2005)
