BANGLADESH. 6 MEN SENTENCED TO DEATH FOR MURDER OF CO-VILLAGER
October 27, 2005: an Additional District and Sessions court in Manikganj, Bangladesh, sentenced to death six men for killing a neighbour at Garakol, Sadar district. Those sentenced to death were Shaheen, Masud, Swapan, Lebu, Apel and Al Amin (tried in absentia), all aged in their early 20s.
They were also fined 10,000 Taka each.Â
According to the prosecution, Shaheen, from neighbouring Diara Bhabanipur village, took 100,000 Taka (approx. 1,250 EU) from Biplab Hossain, 22, promising to be able to send him abroad. This he did not do, nor would he return the money. Biplabâs insistence that the money be returned angered Shaheen, who engaged Swapan, a friend of Biplab, to call him out of his home on June 3, 2003. They then took him to the bank of the Dhaleswari River and stabbed him. Biplob was left for dead and passed away that night as he was being taken to hospital by local residents.
