IRAN. MAN HANGED IN PUBLIC IN NORTHERN CITY
August 7, 2006: an Iranian man convicted of raping and murdering a young girl was hanged in public in the northern town of Babol, the semi-official Fars news agency reported.
The man, identified only as Mehdi Kh., 36, was sentenced for the rape and murder of seven-year-old Mahboubeh Hosseini during last yearâs month of Ramadan. The report added that execution drew a cheering crowd.
The hanging brings to at least 81 the number of people executed in Iran so far in 2006, according to a tally based on press and witness reports. (Sources: AFP, 08/08/2006)
