IRAQ SAYS IT EXECUTED 14 CONVICTED TERRORISTS
February 11, 2007: The Iraqi government said 14 convicted terrorists were executed for murder, kidnappings and rape in five of Iraq's 18 provinces. The statement did not say when or where the suspects were convicted.
The provinces were Karbala, Basra, Wasit and Diwaniyah, all south of Baghdad, and Kirkuk in northern Iraq. One of the executed was identified as Zanoun Younis Salim, who it said was responsible for the death of hundreds of people. A second man was identified as Ahmed Hamed Hassan, who allegedly bombed a mosque south of Baghdad, killing 65 people.
The language used by the statement suggested that all 14 were likely Sunni insurgents or members of al-Qaeda in Iraq. (Sources: ZeeNews.com, 12/02/2007)
