DEATH PENALTY. HANDS OFF CAIN: THE EU MUST NOT YIELD TO LIBYAN BLACKMAIL
July 11, 2007: the directors of Hands Off Cain, Sergio D'Elia, secretary of the association and Rosa Nel Pugno Radical Parliamentarian, and Elisabetta Zamparutti, treasurer, made the following statement regarding the five Bulgarian nurses and the Palestinian doctor sentenced to death in Libya:
âIt was a foreseen outcome that the five Bulgarian nurses and the Palestinian doctor would be condemned by the Supreme Court. It was a result of the Libyan strategy (that the EU has accepted) that was aimed at obtaining the âblood moneyâ that is typical of the Koran. An event that has all the characteristics of a real kidnapping, done by Libya to extort money from Bulgaria and the EU. To resolve the case, the EU must avoid giving in to blackmail and make Libya feel the force of all available political pressure, so that fundamental human rights are respected in that country and a moratorium on capital punishment is introduced.â (Sources: HOC, 11/07/2007)
