UGANDA. CAPITAL PUNISHMENT FOR COUNTERFEITERS
March 3, 2008: the death penalty will await anyone found guilty of perpetuating trade in counterfeit products if the Counterfeit Bill is passed according to Ugandan President Y.K Museveni's wish. According to Uganda Investment Authority boss Dr Maggie Kigozi: "The President asked Parliament to quicken the passing of the Counterfeit Bill into law and make it punitive to culprits in that whoever will be caught in the act will have committed a capital offence".
Currently the counterfeit business accounts for over 10 per cent of international trade and Uganda's market is one of the largest recipients of counterfeit products mainly from China and India.
Some of the counterfeited products include homecare products, processed foods, and electrical appliances counterfeited among others.
The current law provided for a penalty of Shs 3.000 or imprisonment for a few months for offenders. (Sources: The Monitor, 03/03/2008)
