UK. IRANIAN RESISTANCE AQUITTED OF TERRORISM ACCUSATIONS AGAIN

May 7, 2008: the Court of Appeal in London ordered the British Government to remove the People's Mojahedin Organisation of Iran from the UK’s list of terrorist organisations, acknowledging that there is no proof of actual involvement by the PMOI in terrorist activities.
“The insertion of the People's Mojahedin Organisation of Iran in UK’s list of terrorist organisations, the base for its insertion in the European Union’s list, was definitively held to be illegitimate and the British Government must remove it urgently,” Antonio Stango, secretary of the Comitato Italiano Helsinki for Human Rights and a member of Hands Off Cain’s Directive Council, said. He was responding to the Appeal Court’s decision, which definitively rejected an appeal by the British Interior Minister against the order already given by another British magistrate to remove PMOI from the list.
Stango, who has followed the case for years and has promoted numerous initiatives, said that “by illegitimately defining the PMOI as ‘terrorists’, the British Government, by its own admission, obeyed the request by the regime in Tehran. And it dragged the entire European Union over the cliff in a shameful act of submission to those responsible for some of the most serious and systematic violations of human rights in the world.
By falling into the mullah’s trap, Europe, in reality, facilitated the infiltration of the real terrorists sent to the regimes in Iraq, Lebanon and in numerous Eastern countries where they continue to operate. Europe has also shown that it is prone to accepting the nuclear rearmament of Tehran.
Now it is necessary that the community institutions and the governments of the various EU member states urgently repair, at least in part, the damage caused to the Iranian Resistance in these years. They must unfreeze its funds, acknowledge its political value and stop proposing other obstacles to change in Iran.”
Dozens of Italian Parliamentarians, from all political forces, have asked the Italian Government many times to convince the European Council to consider removing the PMOI from the list of terrorist organisations, as established by the European Court of Justice.
The Foreign Affairs Commission of the Italian House of Deputies approved a resolution for this in June 2007, the first signatory being Sergio D’Elia.
Stango declared that, after the last judgement, removing the PMOI from the list of terrorist organisations cannot be delayed. (Sources: HOC, 12/05/2008)
