NIGERIA. 60 CITIZENS ON DEATH ROW IN INDONESIA
June 10, 2008: no fewer than 60 Nigerian nationals are on the death row over drug- related offences in Indonesia alone. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Chief Ojo Maduekwe, made this known in Abuja at an interaction with correspondents covering the ministry.
He said those Nigerians were at the point of being executed in Indonesia for violating the stiff drug laws of the Asian country.
The minister, who had earlier made a case for death sentence passed on a Nigerian to be commuted, wondered how the country would be able to make a case for such a large number of its citizens awaiting execution. 'With over 60 Nigerians on the death row in Indonesia, how will the government be able to make a case for all of them?' he queried. Not long ago, the minister, through the Indonesian ambassador in Abuja, pleaded with the country's authorities to spare the life of a Nigerian who has been condemned for trafficking drugs.
