UNITED ARAB EMIRATES: COURT UPHOLDS DEATH SENTENCE FOR MURDER
February 25, 2009: the Federal Supreme Court in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, upheld the death sentence of Egyptian national Mohammed Abdel Raouf, 32, for the murder of fellow Egyptian construction worker Fathie al Soghaier.
Raouf promised al Soghaier a visa for a relative in Egypt.
Fathie raised Dh4,000 and they met on June 16, 2005, in Ajman's industrial area, according to court records. Raouf confessed to hitting him several times on head with a rock and then cutting his throat and wrist a razor blade. Al Soghaier bled to death. Raouf then stole the Dh 4,000, his wallet and phone.
Raouf was sentenced to death by Ajmanâs Court of First Instance and is to be executed by firing squad at a date yet to be determined. (Sources: The National, 26/02/2009)
