CHINA: EX-MAYOR SENTENCED TO DEATH
August 21, 2009: the former mayor of Chifeng, in northern China, was sentenced to death and fined 100,000 yuan for taking bribes from developers.
Xu Guoyuan was given a two-year reprieve, official government news agency Xinhua reported. Xu was convicted of accepting almost $2 million in bribes between 2002 and 2007. The court also confiscated Xu's property. (Sources: UPI, 21/08/09)
