INDONESIA: BRITISH MAN SENTENCED TO DEATH

September 27, 2012: An Indonesian court has sentenced a British citizen to death for smuggling 6.5kg of crystal methamphetamine into the country. Banten High Court in Java increased the lower court’s sentence of lifetime imprisonment for Gareth Dane Cashmore, 33, saying that it would not send a strong enough message, the Jakarta Post reported.
Presiding judge J. Nababan said: “Narcotics are very dangerous substances that harm the people and the nation. They destroy the human resources that are one of the integral elements to our national development.” Cashmore was arrested at the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport on Sept. 12 last year with 6.5kg of the drug, with an estimated US$1.3 million.
