SOMALIA: PUNTLAND EXECUTES 13 AL-SHABAAB MILITANTS
April 30, 2013: the semi-autonomous State of Puntland executed 13 Al-Shabaab militants convicted on terrorism and assassination charges.
It is the largest single execution by firing squad ever carried out in Puntland.
A Puntland soldier also died after he was hit by stray bullets during the execution at Bossaso.
The 13 militants, including a woman, were sentenced in February by a military court after they were found guilty of carrying out terror acts including assassinations and explosions in Puntland.
"Three of the executed militants were implicated in the killing of Ahmed Haji Abdurahman, a well known scholar assassinated in Bossaso town in December 2012," Abdurahman Hassan Firdhiye, the Prosecutor of Puntlandâs Army Court, told the media.
The prosecutor added that the remaining 10 were accused of other murders and blasts in Puntlandâs main towns including Garowe and Galkayo. (Sources: www.africareview.com, 01/05/2013)
