BANGLADESH: MAN GETS DEATH PENALTY FOR KILLING WIFE IN CTG
January 23, 2014: A Chittagong court sentenced a man to death for killing his wife for dowry.
The convict, Abdul Hannan, 37, of Notun Charpara village in Chandanaish upazila, was also fined Tk 1 lakh. He is now on the run.
Chittagong Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-1 Judge Mohammad Rezaul Karim pronounced the verdict.
Hannan's mother Bareka Khatun, the other accused in the case, was acquitted.
According to court sources, Hannan married Nargis Akter, daughter of Dudu Mia, in 2000 and demanded Tk 50,000 as dowry after marriage. Not getting the dowry, Hannan tortured and strangled Nargis around 10:00pm on April 19, 2001 when she was pregnant.
The next day, locals found her body at anearby sugarcane field. Dudu Mia filed a murder case the same day.
Hannan was arrested after the case was filed but he went into hiding after he got bail on August 7, 2013, said Public Prosecutor Chandan Talukder. (Sources: thedailystar.net, 24/01/2014)
