NIGERIA: POLICEMAN TO HANG OVER MURDER
May 29, 2014: Justice Abdulkareem Abdulrazak of an Osun State High Court sitting in Ilesa has sentenced a police sergeant, Adamu Baruwa, to death by hanging for committing murder.
Delivering his judgement, the judge said the policeman earned maximum sentence based on evidence before him.
He added the law was being applied fully against the subject to serve as a deterrent to other triggerhappy people.
The judge said Baruwa was found guilty after the prosecutors proved their case beyond reasonable doubt.
Baruwa has been on trail since 2012 over his involvement in the death of one Kehinde Awoyedo who was shot dead at Ilesa, Osun State.
He was said to have shot the late Awoyedo with an AK-47 gun on August 20, 2008 and was first arraigned on May 11, 2012 but pleaded not guilty to the one-count charge of murder preferred against him.
Prosecutors from the Osun State Ministry of Justice led by Mr. Moses Faremi, appeared with Bankole Awoyemi, in proving the case. They called five witnesses. (Sources: nationalmirroronline.net, 29/05/2014)
