BANGLADESH: MAN TO WALK GALLOWS FOR KILLING WIFE IN BOGRA
November 6, 2014: A tribunal in Bogra, Bangladesh, convicted a man and sentenced him to death for killing his wife in 1997 for dowry.
The condemned convicted was identified as Riaz Uddin, 56, son of Late Isha Fakir, hailing from Namuza Bagarpara village in Bogra Sadar upazila.
According to the prosecution, Riaz used to torture his wife Piara Khatun, daughter of Late Mihir Uddin of the same village, for dowry.
At one stage of altercation over the dowry Riaz beat her wife with a stick and strangled her to death on April 19, 1997.
Mamataz Uddin, brother of the victim, filed a murder case against six people, including Riaz on the same day with Bogra Sadar Police Station. Police submitted charge sheet in the case on August 19 in the same year
After examining the records and witnesses Judge of Bogra Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-1 handed down the verdict acquitting five other accused as allegations brought against them could not be not proved. (Sources: BdChronicle, 06/11/2014)
